The first part of each book covers the fundamentals of arithmetic, and teaches computational skills with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percents. In the latter part of the book, these skills are applied to a variety of topics, such as measurement, ratio, and proportion, probability, statistics, personal finance, and the solution of simple algebraic equations.
In ARITHMETIC SKILLS the teaching is by example. rather than by exposition. The examples in each unit form a vital part of the text proper. The student's understanding of each topic is immediately reinforced: first, in exercises requiring demonstration of the mastery of the particular computational skill; next, in application problems stressing the ongoing use of critical thinking and problems solving skills. Whenever necessary, a sample solution at the beginning of a set of exercises or application problems shows the students how to proceed. Since the book is designed to permit self-study, the more competent students can proceed on their own, with a minimum of supervision, thus freeing the teacher to work with students who need more help.
COMPONENTS
The hardcover textbook and softcover worktext contain the same information, however the consumable worktext provides additional space for the students to write their responses directly into the worktext, rather than onto a separate piece of paper.
